Paper Abstract:
|
This study investigates communication practices within three UK corporates. This paper presents findings from a comparative qualitative case study with data collection in a series of semi-structured interviews. Each organisation has a different strategic approach to social media use internally and externally. However, many of the practices are similar across all cases. The findings suggest that organisations are failing to control social media use top-down and instead should re-align their strategies to support and guide bottom-up social media use to reap benefits of new connections and relationships. The results have theoretical and practical implications. The study uncovers how new technologies are introduced into organisational praxis, how social media use is motivated and how interest conflicts between the management and employees regarding technology use can be resolved. Practically, the study highlights successful strategies to encourage and align social media use with organisational goals. |
